A scene from a story about award-winning playwright and poet, and co-founder of the Nuyorican Poets Cafe Miguel Pinero and his Mom Adelina Pinero. Playwright Riki Colon wanted to change the narrative when it came to describing Miguel Piñero’s body of work. Narratives always started with an emphasis put on his criminal behavior, addiction, and so on. The play looks at the love and relationship Miguel had with his Barrio and mother. Miguel had compassion behind his street image and wanted more for his people and community. In 1972 his writing of short stories and plays caught the attention of the New York Times, and that led to introductions to theater directors, producers and so on. In 1974 he premiered his work “Short Eyes” to theater audiences and received acclaim and awards. Miguel's life was significantly changed.
Writer and director Riki Colón is searching for a theater to call home base for this Puerto Rican story to take it to its completion.
