D a n c i n g – a documentary on invented space is the first solo exhibition in New York of video artist So Young Yang. In her artistic productions, Yang explores the question of ‘the real’. She combines her main interests in the concept of perception of our surroundings that stems from her background in psychology, as well as how ‘the factual’ is presented through documentaries from her experience as a film editor. Yang works with documented material, which she transforms by enhancing both the audio and the image, creating a specific aesthetic of her own to illuminate the topic of the real. This exhibition is presenting the four video artworks KRO (2012), A DARK PRINT (2012), JULIA (2011), and THE WINDOW (2007), all of which investigate the idea of the choreographed body and the perceived space. Yang considers the dance as an emotional or intellectual struggle that is expressed by the very movement of the body. Her interpretation enhances her perspective on these bodily motions, and she stages a space that expands our notion of what we normally see. These art works are based on material from early phases of rehearsals. Yang uses the footage by reconstructing them and sampling them together in new non-linear ways. Through manipulation of the atmospheric sound and image or through intensifying colours and adding geometric forms, she invents a unique space and time for the dance. This offers not only an original experience of movements, but also addresses the question whether a documentary can ever present an objective, factual world. - Helene Lundbye Petersen
